Do Detox Diets really Work?

 It’s a big question and there are many detox diets out there. Let me try and help you discover your own answer to this common question –

‘Do detox diets really do anything and does a cleanse actually clean anything out?’

Well, let me first introduce myself, I am the author of A Foodies Guide to Juice Fasting. This little book is my story about how I challenged myself to live on nothing but cold-pressed juice for 7 days, not only did I survive the 7 days, my body thrived like no other time before.

So, in a nutshell, I am a big fan of doing an internal body cleanse or following one of the detox diets from time to time.

But, not everyone has the stomach (or should I say the mind strength) to give up eating food and drink nothing but juice for a period of time, so…what other options do we have?

Now, you only have to whisper the word ‘cleanse’ or ‘detox diets’ at Google and you will be inundated with search results, all promising to deliver a myriad of amazing restorative powers back to you.

But, do they really? I mean to say, if I am going to disrupt my life and eat/drink to a very strict discipline for a period of time, I want a guarantee that it’s going to work – don’t you?

Now I know that no one can actually guarantee across the board for every person that undertakes a ‘particular cleanse’ that it will deliver the results it says it will, that’s because we are all different and we all have ‘stuff’ going on that’s different and we all approach it differently. But, the best you can aim for is a testimonial from someone who has done the cleanse and told their story – so, this is what I am doing right now, providing you with a testimonial of a recent cleanse I have done.

Medical Medium Cleanse to Heal

Under the spotlight – Anthony William (Medical Medium) 9 day Liver Cleanse

As the Spring Solstice clicked over (23 September) my husband and I did the Anthony William – 9 day Liver Cleanse. We did do it last year and really enjoyed it, so we wanted to do it again to see if it we still enjoyed it.

What is it?

In essence, it is 9 days of eating plant-based foods. 9 days where you eliminate meat, white flour and all processed foods from your diet.

One recent study found that for every serving of fatty meat or refined grains that we replace with whole, plant-food it actually drops the risk of having liver issues by a whopping 13%.

So, imagine what happens across 9 days of following this cleanse – you are seriously helping out your liver!

It’s a great system, with recipes that taste amazing!

“For most people, the liver has become so overburdened by its role in processing problematic foods and toxins that it is no longer able to perform over 2,000 critical functions — many of them yet to be discovered. My 9 Day Liver Cleanse

Days 1-3: Gear Up

The first 3 days is where you prepare your liver to cleanse. It involves you having lots of cleansing water, apples and dates and eating a lot of highly colourful, plant-based meals.

Anthony William says: “Apples provide an active living water that hydrates the liver and supports the liver’s ability to hydrate your body. Apples also starve bacteria, yeast and mold out of the intestinal tract and liver. In doing so they keep sludge out of the gallbladder.”


  • Start each day with 473ml (16oz.) of lemon (or lime) water – this helps to flush the waste accumulated overnight
  • Wait 20 minutes and then have 473ml (16oz.) of celery juice
  • Throughout the day, snack on apples, which help hydrate and cleanse the liver, and dates, which William says warm the liver. William recommends eating up to 4 apples and 4 dates a day during the Gear Up phase
  • Eat meals from within William’s Cleanse to Heal (or Liver Rescue) Books: mainly fruits and vegetables. No wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, meat, corn, soy, or canola oil.
  • Enjoy a cup of hibiscus or lemon balm tea, as desired.
  • Finish the day with 473ml (16oz) lemon or lime water.

Days 4-6: Unpack

Now that you’ve given your liver all of what it needs to do the work, the middle 3 days is where your liver goes to work to ‘package’ up all of the toxins and waste materials. This 3 days involves lots of healing being provided by the combination of brussel sprouts and asparagus.

Anthony William says: “Asparagus is high in flavonoids and powerful anti-inflammatory compounds—they’re like a natural aspirin. They also expel and dislodge fat cells and other poisons. Asparagus cleanses, detoxifies and soothes the liver. Brussels sprouts are an ultimate liver cleansing food. You can eat them raw, steam them or even juice them. Brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables have a special sulfur that expels poisons and pathogens from your liver.”

  • Start each day with 473ml (16o.z) of lemon (or lime) water – this helps to flush the waste accumulated overnight
  • Wait 20 minutes and then have 473ml (16oz.) of celery juice
  • Wait 20 minutes and then have a nourishing Liver Rescue Smoothie*
  • Snack on two healing apples, 1–4 dates, and celery sticks.
  • Lunch and dinner include heaping portions of steamed asparagus and/or Brussels sprouts atop a healing salad of tomatoes, cucumber, celery, leafy greens, and the juice of a lemon, lime, or orange.
  • Finish the day with hibiscus or lemon balm tea.

*Liver Rescue Smoothie: Blend 2 bananas, 1⁄2 cup fresh or frozen dragon fruit, 2 cups fresh or frozen wild blueberries; thin with water as desired.

Day 7-9: Let go.

The final 3 days is where your liver is powered up to release and let go of all of the toxins and waste it has safely stored over the previous 3 days. The final 3 days is ‘liquid-heavy’ with recipes like Spinach Soup over Cucumber Noodles with the final day being an all-liquid day.

Anthony William says: “Spinach has mineral salts and nutrients that help the liver. It also helps the liver receive vitamin B12 better. Tomatoes harness critical phytochemicals, micronutrients, vitamins and minerals that support the liver. The fruit acid in a tomato also helps the gallbladder eliminate some of the sludge that can sit in the bottom of the gallbladder. They also dissolve gallstones.”


  • Start each day with 473ml (16oz.) of lemon (or lime) water – this helps to flush the waste accumulated overnight
  • Wait 20 minutes and then have 473ml (16oz.) of celery juice
  • Wait 20 minutes and then have a nourishing Liver Rescue Smoothie*
  • Snack on two apples, celery sticks, and cucumber slices on days 7 and 8. On days 7 and 8, lunch will be spinach soup over cucumber noodles.
  • For dinner, keep eating the salad and steamed asparagus/brussel sprouts, but on Day 7, add steamed squash, sweet potatoes, or potatoes.
  • Day 9 is an all-liquid day: Sip 1 cup (8 oz.) of water every three hours. Enjoy celery juice, cucumber-apple juice, and fresh-squeezed orange juice as often as desired to flush out remaining poisons from the liver.
  • Finish the day with a cup of hibiscus or lemon balm tea, as desired.

After 9 Days How did I feel?

Overall, I felt great. The recipes are easy to follow (if not a bit time-consuming) but every dish is a winner. I loved the recipes so much I have introduced many of them into our regular way of eating!

I have done a few detox diets before and this one I found I had plenty of energy throughout the 9 days, it was easy to do and I never felt hungry or had any detox symptoms (i.e. headache, nausea etc…). I lost a kilo of weight and my skin was clear and glowing. And, whilst all of the results might not be fully evident right now, I know I have provided my liver with full support for 9 days to restore, rejuvenate and release and that gives me great pleasure!!!

Most of the meals needed something made in a blender.
